To Pinterest or to not?

I will be the first to say, that I have yet to join Pinterest.  After looking at the site and seeing what it is all about, I am seeing a theme that is geared toward women.  This doesn't mean it can't be an excellent resource in the classroom, however if I want to full commitment from the students, I really think it needs to be more gender neutral.  Maybe with time and as it's popularity grows it will become more guy friendly? I'm interested to hear if anyone has similar opinions on the site....

  1. I agree with your initial assessment that pintrest is for women. My male friends joke that they are going to start a companion site "mentrist" for guys. Even the "education" tab/pinboard seems to be geared towards crafts and classroom decoration.

Even though there didnt appear to be many out there already, having kids make and publish their own science related pins would be a good way to keep them engaged. Perhaps a good assignment would be to have students choose between posting to a blog OR to pinterest.

  2. Yes, I definitely see how it is geared towards women as well. Since I joined a few weeks ago, several of my female Facebook friends have started to follow me on Pinterest. I am sure though that it can be geared towards men somehow, perhaps by what interests one chooses to follow.

  3. I totally agree, too. In fact, most of the Pinterest articles I read talks about it targeting the 20-30 year-old female demographics. I did see something interesting that has been started within the past month, Gentlemint, a Pinterest-type site for men. http://gentlemint.com/

  4. Of course, it is likely that Pinterest will evolve, as it becomes more widely used. Perhaps we just need some innovative ways to co-opt Pinterest educationally?

  5. A friend of mine sent this post to Facebook to me. He has "friended" the VT page. Seems VT is on Pinterest, too.
